"Titles" is the result of an experiment I conducted with my friend, Ninad Bhat. About six months ago, we decided to come up with 8 meaningless titles and each form a collection of works around them (Ninad would create 8 pieces of written word, and I would create 8 pieces of recorded music). The one rule we imposed for ourselves was that I would not read any of his work and he would not listen to any of mine until we were both finished with the project.

It didn’t matter whether we chose to interpret each title literally or figuratively, or whether we even chose to make our works "interpretations" of the titles at all. The idea of the project was to see how we would each approach and complete the same task from two different, mutually isolated creative spaces.

My half of the project resulted in a gapless album which essentially constitutes a single 8-movement, 46-minute-long piece of music. For me, Titles was an exercise in thematic, textural, and soundscape composition. I wanted to write an album integrating a simple 4-note motif into a variety of melodic and environmental contexts, joining a tonal and rhythmic structure with an ambient aural setting to create a sort of landscape of sound. By combining audio effects with instrumental performance and field recording, this album (hopefully) moves the listener through that shifting soundscape to explore the wide auditory space it reflects.
